AIL - Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab
The Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab (AIL) was founded in 2014 and is located in the center of the former Postsparkasse building.
The AIL offers, through its interdisciplinary program, deep insight into the diverse activities of the University of Applied
Arts Vienna. With the Café Exchange, it also provides a public space for dialogue, networking, and exquisite coffee, created
by Alexander Afrough.
AIL is both a space and a platform for projects at the intersection of art, science, and artistic research. It stands for
vibrant discourse and the development of interdisciplinary projects. In addition, AIL connects partner institutions from the
fields of science, art, design, and research with the resources of the university. AIL offers a variety of formats such as
exhibitions, symposia, panel discussions, as well as workshops and performances.
Closely linked to the vision, principles, and thematic orientation of the university, art and artistic research are presented
as central driving forces of renewal and as essential for change. Projects that emerge at the university are given a platform
at AIL, and the wealth of knowledge generated within the university is made accessible to a broad public. The aim is to address
future-oriented topics from various disciplines and current socially relevant transformations, and to reflect on them from
different perspectives in collaboration with project partners. At the heart of this engagement is the role of art and its
potential within society.
