Sonic Relations

Group exhibition

The group exhibition brings together works from the seminar Sonic Art. Sound as Material in Artistic Practice (Department of Support Art and Research), created under the direction of Karl Salzmann as part of the ÆSR – Applied/Experimental Sound Research Lab.
Sonic Relations explores sound as a material. Drawing on approaches from electroacoustic practice and current debates surrounding the ‘Sonic Turn’, the works on display combine form and context: from the sculptural manipulation of sound to spatially situated installations that explore listening environments, narratives and identity. On display is a broad spectrum, ranging from video works and interventions on the theme of sound and identity, to drums moving through space and specially developed receiver antennas. The works explore how sound influences our perception, how it affects the environment and the body, what aesthetic and political possibilities historical and contemporary technologies open up, and what can be learnt from soundscapes and transformed through interventions. Sound is presented not merely as something to be heard, but as a medium that shapes spaces, forges relationships and shifts discourses.
