LUDIC SOIRÉE: Acts Of Play with Christoph Frey
An event of the
Department of Experimental Game Cultures
Media artist Christoph Frey provides an overview of his interactive
works and uses examples to describe the practice and theory behind his approach. The focus is on his experimental video game
“The Space Between,” a 40-50 minute horror experience in three acts. Using the game as a starting point, he talks about the
visual, acoustic, and thematic aspects of his work and how the act of play during game development itself becomes an important
creative process in exploring and sharpening themes and emotional spaces. The act of play thus resembles an act of a theater
play, that you improvise to yourself in order to better understand it and engage with it, to play yourself towards it.
Christoph Frey is an Austrian media artist, who sees his field of work
in experimental films and sound design, as well as in the field of experimental videogames. In 2020 his videogame „The Space
Between“ won the Independent Games Festival’s Nuovo Award during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. He is currently
living and working in Linz, Upper Austria.
