In today’s world of always-on media, the planet’s issues often take a back seat to clickbait.
In part, this is due to the enormity of these topics. The issues are what philosopher Timothy Morton calls hyperobjects
- objects or events whose dimensions in space and time are massive in relation to a human life. Their effects may be experienced
even if they cannot be necessarily touched.
In this exhibition, Neil Mendoza uses kinetic art
to explore these issues. He aims to steer around the desensitization experienced when bombarded with information about these
topics by using humor, motion and found objects as a backdoor into people’s psyches. Just as Dada was a reaction to the chaos
and violence of WW1, Mendoza’s work uses absurdity as a reaction to the seemingly unalterable path of growing consumption
that society is following at the expense of a sustainable future.
Neil Mendoza’s work combines
sculpture, electronics and software to bring inanimate objects and spaces to life. He has exhibited work f.e. at
Oi futuro,
Rio de Janeiro, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Barbican Centre, London and talked at conferences around the world, taught
classes on art and technology at UCLA and Stanford and co-founded the art collective
